Richard Brown ARB RIBA — Architect & Founder

Richard Brown is an award-winning architect and the founder of Brown Urbanism, a design-led architecture and research studio established in 2012. Based in London, the practice was shaped by Richard’s early experiences living, studying, and working in Hackney Wick and Fish Island — neighbourhoods whose industrial legacy, semi-public spaces, and creative communities continue to inform his approach.

Driven by a deep interest in how places evolve through accessibility, identity, and shared space, Richard’s work focuses on the formation of inclusive, mixed-use neighbourhoods. His practice spans architecture, urban research, and community engagement, offering full architectural services (RIBA Stages 0–7) alongside strategic planning, project management, and participatory design.

He studied architecture at the Royal College of Art, London Metropolitan University, and the University for the Creative Arts in Canterbury. He has taught and reviewed work at institutions including The Cass School of Architecture, the Royal College of Art, and UCA Canterbury.

Richard’s project portfolio includes private homes, new-build housing, affordable workspace, heritage refurbishments, and public realm design. He has worked with a diverse range of clients — from workspace providers and independent retail businesses to housing developers and individual homeowners.

A strong advocate for architecture as an applied art, Richard believes every designer should experience building on site to understand how buildings are coordinated and resolved as a collaborative effort. In 2022–23, he designed and self-built the Triangle House in West Hampstead — a compact, street-facing live-work studio that won Best Project Under £100k in the 2024 Don’t Move, Improve! Awards.

Amrit Ubha MArch

Amrit is a Part II Architectural Assistant, having completed her BSc at the Welsh School of Architecture and her MArch at London Metropolitan University. Throughout her studies, Amrit was keenly interested in reuse and regeneration, exploring how new architecture can enhance the character of the existing environment at small and large scales. This interest has followed through to her professional career, where she enjoys working on projects of all types to make meaningful use of space, contributing positively to the surrounding community and culture.

In her role at Brown Urbanism, Amrit is working on a variety of detailed projects, including home improvement designs at feasibility, planning, tender and construction stages, as well as a larger scheme for an affordable workspace fitout.

Previously to undertaking her master’s, Amrit spent three years at a practice in Essex, where she was involved in various residential and commercial projects. Through this time, she gained a comprehensive understanding of planning processes, and an appreciation for unique house extensions and conversion projects.

Outside of the studio, Amrit enjoys drawing, digital and film photography, and catching up with Formula 1 at weekends.
