Ealing Return
A carefully crafted side-return extension in Ealing that replaces a tired, leaky addition with a generous new kitchen and dining space forming a new centre o the family home.
The brief was to create a spacious, light-filled extension that could accommodate everyday family life, while also incorporating additional storage and a discreet utility area. We explored a number of layout options, testing different kitchen–utility–front room relationships to balance functionality, circulation and natural light.
The final design connects the front room and the new extension through two softly rounded arches. This approach opens up long views through the house, allowing daylight to travel from east to west in line with the building’s orientation.
The arched openings establish two clear routes from front to back, naturally forming a central kitchen island. A dining area and snug are positioned either side, both enjoying views of the rear garden through a large glazed sliding door and a side-hung casement window.
Exposed pitched timber rafters are carefully set beneath the roof glazing, introducing a gentle rhythm to the ceiling and casting subtle, dappled light throughout the day.
Planning permission was granted in Spring 2025, with construction starting on site promptly with a duration of 3-4 months completing in Autumn 2025
